Refocusing the Blog

So it seems I’ve turned on my most prized readership. When I started this blog, there was one group of people in particular to whom I regularly directed my writing: my family and friends. My posts of late have featured more than a normal amount of Techno-speak, which is not all that fun to read for many of my readers.

I attribute this change in focus to the fact that my blog is now a part of the ThoughtBlogs, so my voice doesn’t only represent me, but the company I work for as well. Being syndicated on other sites gives me a bit of the heebie-jeebies, and makes me not want to talk about things that are all that personal…for whatever reasons.
I need to do something about this. I want my friends and family back. I know my writing has ignored you a bit, and I’m sorry about that. I’ll do better.

For everybody else, no worries. I’ll still be around (and plenty technical…if you can call my writing techinical at all), but you might just not see the personal stuff unless you surf on over to the blog itself.

Speaking of which, have you checked out the new design yet?

  1. hey josh-oooh-ahhh, i think your blog is ugly now, no offense. it’s kind of plain and also the top logo with the white bar and red box with your name in it doesn’t match the rest of the blog.

maybe your blog is more “user friendly” now, but it’s ugly. i like pretty things.

  2. Hmmm… I dig the new design for the most part, but is the banner supposed to be plain white? Methinks something more should be there (an image or something?)

  3. hmmm… i must admit, all the whitespace at the top kind of wigs me out a little bit. i waited a couple seconds for something else to load, and then i was like… nope. it’s just white. huh.

i know that sometimes i have really amazing ideas of how something will look in my head and then i try to implement it and it’s not… quite… there… but it’s so close that it reminds me of my idea, so i keep going, and eventually i discover that it just needs like a stripe of color, or a different margin, or a picture of a pig or something.

    graphic design is weird.

so anyway, i hope that came out as encouraging, and not “oh i bet you really meant to do something different”, bc it’s your blog, dude, do whatever makes you happy to log in and write.

and who knows, next year the world could be in love with whitespace and we could all say we knew you when, and look at slides of your visionary design skills.

slides with no text, of course. 😉

as for the split readership, have you thought about sending separate categories to different feeds? like how all of erik’s planet info posts are labeled “professional”, even when they’re about couches. that makes me laugh every goldarn time.
