Damn it Apple. Why must you disappoint me?

So here I am at the Apple store in Chicago…disappointed. I came today to have them look at my iPod shuffle. It’s got a software issue because I pulled it from the computer before it was ready to be pulled from the computer. They just told me that the damage is not repairable, but they can’t give me a new one because I’m out of my warranty period.

So what the eff am I supposed to do now? It’s obvious I’ll have to buy a new music player if I don’t want to carry around my giant 60 gig iPod that i’m pondering selling on ebay.

So what do I do? Do I jump to the nano? They’re pretty little machines, but do the batteries last? I’m going to be spending a lot of time on planes next year, so I don’t just want the battery to up and quit all the time. Plus, it just might be to big to carry with me all the time…and maybe even too big to fit in the tiny pocket on my running shorts (maybe not?).

I have loved my shuffle. Great battery life. It’s a brick. I’ve had no problems up until now…and it was my fault. But it’s got no screen. A screen would be nice. Some more space would be nice too. But it fits in my life. Wherever I go, there’s room for the shuffle.

Oh, and those iPod videos look pretty too. Horrible battery life. But pretty. And much smaller than my current iPod.

Or I could just not have a music player for a while and “tough it out.”

Am I lusting? I can trade in my old, broken shuffle for a new one and get 10% off. Plus the 10% I get for being a student (gotta use it while it lasts). So Internet, I ask again: What do I do?

  1. You could try seeing if any of the Office Depot stores near you have one of
these in stock. It’s a Creative 512MB player that’s pretty similar to the 512MB shuffle, with the small exception that it’s only $15 after rebates. I picked up one for myself the other day.

As a note, the deal is in-store only and the online site stinks for checking stock. What you’d want to do is go into the store closest to you and check stock for stores in your area. Tthere’s generally a computer in the “Ink Depot” section of the store that you can use to check stock — just type in the SKU for the item (316928) and you should be able to find it.

As a second note, you could also see if you could find any of the other MP3 players listed in the Office Depot Clearance Thread over at FatWallet. Chances aren’t very good for finding anything, but if you do happen to find a store with one of them in stock, there are some very good deals to be had. What I usually do is just print out the list, make note of what I’m interested in and check the SKUs one by one in-store at the Ink Depot computer.

  2. apple’s website claims a 12 hour battery life for the shuffle and a 14 hour battery life for the nano. and for just 50 bucks more than the shuffle you get a color screen and a lot more features.

  3. I have an iPod video and I haven’t had any issues with the battery. It seems like it lasts forever. I used it everywhere I went over xmas break and it never once died on a plane. During school, I would use to back and forth to campus all week and not have to charge it. The only time the battery gets drained (so I hear) is if you play alot of videos, which I guess for some might be the point of an iPod video, but I have yet to put videos on mine.

  4. my friend trev recommends taking it to another apple store. maybe they’re just jerks at the chicago store. he also said not to tell them what hapened unless they ask. “my ipod is broken, can you fix it for me??” trying to look cute and batting your eyes may help too. or better yet, ask karen to do it. {; o)
